An almost perfect way to show the horrors of WW1. No actors, no cgi, no perfectly planned story with a message, no manipulative score, no sugar coating or exaggeration, just real veteran interviews and beautifully restored footage. The way the interviews and footage are edited to tell the story of the war is fantastic and seamless. The sound design is immersive and blends perfectly in with the footage. I’d say my only problem is that sometimes they have actors voice over silent footage of people talking, which I would’ve preferred they left that up to interpretation and just added the sound effects. Nothing like anything Peter Jackson made before this but a welcome addition to his filmography nonetheless.

There’s maybe two good songs and the rest is boring filler. Generic pop music disguised as heavy metal.

Classic blaxploitation soundtrack that has great production but is ultimately hard to take seriously due to the cheesy lyrics and stereotypical music. Blaxploitation movies are an interesting piece of Hollywood history but they have not aged well, and while not on the same level it’s the same for their soundtracks. I appreciate this album though because it is truly passionate for a film soundtrack that isn’t even a musical, the dedication of Curtis Mayfield is respectable.
